Collector notes

Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into National Gold & Diamond Outlet in Warwick, RI. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

  1. Insurance and probate need different paperwork

If a lawyer, an executor, or an insurer sent you, say so. Bring what papers you have. The shop may not be the appraiser you need, and they will tell you. That honesty is useful. It is better than leaving with the wrong kind of number.

  2. They may weigh, look up, or photograph

That is how a careful shop works. It is not stalling. Stay with your coins. If they need a minute in the back, that is their process. Ask if you are unsure what is happening. Curiosity is fine. Suspicion as a default is not.

  3. Do not ask them to come out to the car

Bring the coins inside. A dealer should not leave the store to look at a trunk. It is a safety issue for them and for you. If the lot is heavy, make two trips or ask if they have a cart. The work happens at the counter.

  4. Say thank you even if you do not deal

Looking is part of the hobby. Buying or selling is not required. If they spent time with you, say thanks and mean it. A short good visit is how regulars are made. A review later, if you had a fair experience, helps the shop more than a vague promise to “come back sometime.”

  5. No magnets, acids, or scratch tests on the pad

The shop has the tools if a test is needed. Do not perform experiments on the glass. You can damage the coin and the counter. If you think something is fake, say why and let them look.
