Visiting a coin shop

A few notes before you walk into Coin & Professional Equipment in Tucson, AZ. These rotate daily. They are general collector etiquette from CDXList — not this shop’s house rules. When something is unclear, ask the person at the counter.

1. 01

   A hold is a promise. Mean it.

   If they hold a coin for you, ask how long and how you pay. Come back or call. Do not park the same piece at two shops. Dealers remember the customer who used a hold as a free option. They also remember the one who did what they said.

   Bring coins in a way they can actually look at them

   Trays, albums, and labeled bags beat a torn grocery sack. Do not pour coins onto glass. Hand them a box they can work through. Dirt, food, and loose batteries in the same tin make a poor first impression and a slower look.

   Wait your turn at the counter

   A coin shop is not a buffet line. The person already at the glass is in a private conversation. Stand back, keep your box closed, and wait to be invited forward. Jumping in with “real quick” questions while someone is selling a collection is the fastest way to start a visit on the wrong foot.

   If you feel rushed, you can pause

   You are allowed to say you need a minute. You are allowed to pack up and think. You are not required to decide while someone is waiting behind you — step aside and let them go. A good shop would rather you be sure than sorry.

5. 05

   Show week can empty the shop — or pack it

   If the dealer is on the road, the store may be closed or on shorter hours. If they just got back, they may be unpacking. Check this listing for upcoming shows and call if your visit is important. It is not personal. The bourse is part of the business.
